Skye is one of Scotland’s most beautiful places and there is no better time to visit than the Spring, April and May are the driest months. If you don’t mind it being chilly, these are great months to visit. As the land awakens after its winter slumbers the landscape comes alive with colour. Rich green croft land blends with rustic reds of the heather moorland and the azure blue of the sea. The sound of new life is everywhere with the bleating of newborn lambs and the chatter and calling of young birds. With fifteen hours of daylight there is plenty of time to explore the sights and sounds of Skye’s unique landscape.
Most businesses are on fully open hours during the spring season. However, make sure to check their websites or contact them in advance to confirm their operating hours to avoid disappointment.
While on the island, consider purchasing local products and crafts. This helps support the local economy and provides you with unique souvenirs to take home.
While Skye may be a little less crowded in spring, it’s still a good idea to book your accommodation in advance. This is also a great time to pick up deals on hotels and self-catering! Campsites are likely to be open now, so bear that in mind if you’re planning something a little more wild or you are on a budget.
Check for any events happening during your visit! The LAS centre in Portree and the Skye Bridge Studios have a fun mix of music, theatre and comedy taking place to keep the locals busy over the all season. Listings can be found on their websites. During the spring season, the SkyeLive music festival takes place, an amazing event with excellent lineups, food and more.
When travelling around Skye, it is always important to leave no trace and follow responsible tourism practices. Bin all rubbish, respect the wildlife and their natural habitats, and stick to designated trails and paths.
Spring is an excellent time for photography on Skye. The full blooms and vibrant colours create stunning landscapes and photo opportunities, and you’re likely to encounter more wildlife.
Be prepared for variable weather conditions in the Spring months. Skye’s weather can change quickly, so bring appropriate clothing and gear for rain, wind, and chilly temperatures even on the warmer seasons.

We’re famous for our world-renowned island whiskies. Winter is an excellent time to feel the warmth of this ‘uisge beatha’ (‘Water Of Life’).
Both Torabhaig and Talisker Distilleries are open for tours, tastings and gifts during winter. Visiting both will help you uncover the incredible variety and flavour of two great whiskies made only a few miles apart. No two whiskies taste the same, and this will prove it!
After visiting Talisker Distillery, be sure to make a pit stop at the Oyster Shed in Carbost. Here’s you’ll taste some of the freshest Scottish Seafood available, cooked in a simple way that lets the freshness and tastiness shine through.
For another memorable tasting experience of incredible local produce, you can book a visit to the Isle of Skye Smokehouse. The wood-fired smokehouse uses locally sourced alder wood which is processed by hand. Uniquely Designed around a traditional Scottish cleit the smokehouse incorporates a peat roof and stone walls and smokes both Salmon and Trout. This tasting experience has close to 200 5 Star reviews.
As you travel around the island you’ll also have the opportunity to stop in at the Cuillin and Isle of Skye Breweries to pick up some local ales. In Portree, you can stop by the Gin School and taste the award-winning Misty Isle Gin.
